The overall deal is worth £70 million. United will pay £65 million up front, which is more than Tk 1.09 billion, while a further £5 million could be paid in add-ons if certain conditions are met.
The agreement also includes a sell-on clause that will give Brighton a percentage of any future transfer fee if Baleba is sold.
United have brought in the 22-year-old primarily to add more strength and depth to their midfield. Despite signing Andre Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa earlier in the summer, manager Michael Carrick was still keen to reinforce the area.
Baleba has signed a five-year contract with United, with an option to extend the deal by another year. The midfielder was delighted to finally join the club he has dreamed of playing for.
“It’s an incredible feeling to join my dream club. Playing at Old Trafford has always been something special, but having the opportunity to walk out there as a Manchester United player is a real honour.”
The young midfielder is also looking forward to working under Carrick, who he believes can help him reach the highest level of his career.
“His experience and knowledge of the game make him the ideal coach to help me reach the highest level. The ambition at the club is very clear. It’s an exciting time ahead, and I want to give everything I have to help us achieve the success we are capable of.”
United’s interest in Baleba is nothing new. The club tried to sign him towards the end of last year’s transfer window, but Brighton’s valuation of more than £100 million put United off a deal at the time.
This time, however, the two clubs reached an agreement for a significantly lower fee.
Baleba joined Brighton from French side Lille in 2023. He made 112 appearances for the Premier League club, scoring four goals. Last season, he featured in 31 Premier League matches.
Brighton finished eighth in the league last season, securing a place in the Conference League for the new campaign.
