Emiliano Martínez Makes Chelsea Debut and Enters the Record Books

Emiliano Martínez made his Premier League debut for Chelsea at the age of 33 years and 362 days, immediately earning a place in the club’s history. The Argentina World Cup winner became the fourth-oldest goalkeeper to make his Premier League debut for the Stamford Bridge side.

Only three goalkeepers were older than Martínez when they first appeared for Chelsea in the Premier League. At the top of the list is Mark Schwarzer, who made his Chelsea debut in April 2014 at the age of 41 years and 195 days.

Jerry Peyton sits second, having made his first appearance for the Blues in January 1993 at 36 years and 255 days old. The third spot belongs to fellow Argentine goalkeeper Willy Caballero, who made his Premier League debut for Chelsea in January 2018 at the age of 36 years and 114 days.

Martínez’s first appearance for Chelsea ended on a winning note on Sunday, as the Blues secured a victory over Brighton. The Argentine goalkeeper made four crucial saves to deny clear goal-scoring opportunities, although he was beaten three times during the match.
