Namibia Shock South Africa Again

The memories of that famous win 10 months ago are still fresh. Now, Namibia have brought those memories back once again with another historic victory over South Africa. After a brilliant start with the bat from their openers, Namibia’s bowlers combined to produce an impressive performance and beat the Proteas once again.

Namibia defeated South Africa by 18 runs in the Tri-Nation T20I Series. Batting first in Windhoek, Namibia posted 163 for 9. South Africa had their chances in the chase, with Dewald Brevis leading the way with a superb 75, but his effort was not enough. Namibia kept picking up wickets at crucial moments and eventually restricted the visitors to 145 for 9 in 19.5 overs.

South Africa’s chase got off to a shaky start. Both openers, Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Jordan Hermann, were dismissed with just 19 runs on the board. They managed only 34 runs for two wickets during the powerplay before Tony de Zorzi was dismissed in the seventh over, leaving South Africa in further trouble.

Brevis, however, kept his side in the game from one end. But he struggled to find a reliable partner at the other. The right-hander brought up his second T20I half-century with a six, keeping South Africa’s hopes alive.

With three overs remaining, South Africa needed 35 runs for victory. The partnership between Brevis and Duan Jansen made the target look far from impossible. But everything changed when Brevis was dismissed in the 18th over. He walked back after scoring a brilliant 75 off 50 balls, with four sixes and five fours.

South Africa needed 31 runs from the final 12 balls with three wickets in hand. Namibia, however, held their nerve and bowled intelligently under pressure, allowing the Proteas to score only 12 more runs.

Earlier, Namibia were sent in to bat after losing the toss and made a flying start through openers Lorren Stolkamp and Jan Frylinck. The pair put together an 84-run opening stand from 58 balls, laying the foundation for a strong total. Stolkamp scored 41 from 29 balls before departing, while Frylinck then added another 32-run partnership with Gerhard Erasmus.

But once that second-wicket stand was broken, Namibia’s batting lineup suddenly collapsed. From 116 for 1 after 13.5 overs, they lost five wickets while adding just 17 runs. They were unable to score a single run in the 16th over, although the final four overs brought 30 runs.

In the end, Namibia’s total proved to be more than enough. Their bowlers delivered when it mattered most, completing another memorable victory over South Africa.

The Tri-Nation Series continues tomorrow at the same venue, with South Africa set to face Zimbabwe.
