Amid the growing political turmoil, reports have revealed that UEFA is preparing a contingency plan that could reshape international football. If Infantino survives the FIFA presidential election next March, Europe's governing body is reportedly ready to launch its own global international tournament to rival the FIFA World Cup.
The unprecedented situation has emerged just two weeks after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 to win their second FIFA World Cup title at the recently concluded 2026 tournament. Calls for Infantino's resignation have grown louder following the collapse of FIFA's commercial rights sales strategy, which has sparked widespread criticism of his leadership.
According to reports, the 56-year-old FIFA president sought assistance from U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday as pressure from European football associations continued to mount. Despite being widely regarded as one of Infantino's closest political allies, Trump reportedly declined to intervene or offer any support.
Although many observers believe Infantino is unlikely to survive the presidential election in March, UEFA is determined not to leave anything to chance. European football officials are reportedly preparing an alternative competition should Infantino secure another term in office.
According to Sky Sports, the proposal was put forward by UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin and is known internally as the Global Nations League.
Proposed Tournament Format
The proposed competition would begin with regional qualifying tournaments before an eight-team final tournament. It would be staged during odd-numbered years, when neither the FIFA World Cup nor the UEFA European Championship takes place.
Seven-Tier ‘Mini World Cup’
The concept also includes seven separate divisions based on the FIFA rankings. Each division's final stage would begin directly from the quarter-finals, creating a compact, high-stakes international competition.
Team Allocation
Under the proposal, the top-tier finals would feature eight nations:
- 3 teams from Europe
- 2 teams from South America
- 1 team each from Africa, Asia, and North America
The original blueprint was first developed in 2017 but was shelved after FIFA decided to expand the Club World Cup. However, reports now suggest UEFA is prepared to revive the project if Infantino remains in power after the upcoming FIFA presidential election.
If implemented, the Global Nations League could become the biggest challenge yet to FIFA's dominance of international football, potentially creating a new era of competition between the world's two most influential football governing bodies.
