In his farewell message, Messi revealed that he had already drafted a statement announcing his retirement just two days after the 2026 World Cup final. However, following the death of his father and longtime agent, Jorge Messi, earlier this month, he decided to make the announcement official.
Messi’s retirement has left his Argentina teammates deeply emotional. Social media has been filled with heartfelt tributes and memories from those who shared the pitch with the legendary captain. Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez was among those who paid tribute, sharing an emotional message for his beloved skipper.
In a post on social media, Lisandro admitted that he was not prepared for Messi’s farewell. Even so, he described the way Messi left the international stage as nothing short of royal.
“Honestly, I’m deeply saddened. No one is ever prepared for a farewell like this. But from the bottom of my heart, thank you! You are a unique example, not only for me but for the entire world. You have been a winner on the pitch and equally successful in life.”
Alongside expressing what it meant to have played alongside Messi, Lisandro also brought up his young daughter. The defender, popularly known as “The Butcher,” wrote:
“My daughter will one day feel incredibly proud knowing that her father played on the same team as such an extraordinary person.”
Lisandro ended his heartfelt tribute by declaring Messi the greatest of all time, writing:
“You are the greatest athlete in the history of sport. Because when it comes to football, honestly, there is no comparison with anyone else. I love you so, so much.”
