Messi and Di Maria Could Be Teammates Again

Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria could reunite as Inter Miami teammates in 2027
Angel Di Maria said goodbye to international football after the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Since then, the World Cup-winning star has not shared the pitch with Lionel Messi in an Argentina shirt. That could change at club level, however, with reports suggesting that Di Maria could join Major League Soccer side Inter Miami and reunite with his longtime friend and former Argentina teammate.

The 38-year-old winger recently hinted that his future remains uncertain following Rosario Central’s elimination from the Copa Libertadores. While Di Maria has made it clear that he wants to continue playing, he has yet to decide where he will play next. Amid that uncertainty, Inter Miami has emerged as one of the possible destinations.

According to international football outlet GOAL, Inter Miami had previously explored the possibility of signing Di Maria, although those talks never resulted in a deal. Now, with 2027 on the horizon, the possibility of the Argentine joining the MLS club is reportedly back on the table.

Messi and Di Maria have shared a special bond both on and off the pitch, and their understanding played a major role in some of Argentina’s greatest successes. Together, they have won five major international trophies, including the World Cup, Copa America and Finalissima. Their journey together began long before those triumphs, when they won Olympic gold at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Di Maria became an Argentine hero at the 2021 Copa America, scoring the only goal in the final against Brazil to end the country’s 28-year wait for a major international trophy. A year later, he played an important role in Argentina’s Finalissima victory over Italy before helping the team lift the World Cup in Qatar. In the unforgettable World Cup final against France, Messi scored twice while Di Maria also found the net in a performance that remains etched in Argentine football history.

Argentina’s golden era reached another milestone with their Copa America triumph in 2024. It was shortly after that tournament that Di Maria announced his retirement from international football. Nearly two years have passed since then, and the two friends have not had the chance to play together in the same shirt.

That could change if Di Maria decides to continue his career with Inter Miami. A move to the MLS club could see Messi and Di Maria reunited at club level as early as the beginning of next year.

For now, everything depends on Di Maria’s next decision. But the possibility of seeing two of Argentina’s greatest modern-day footballers wearing the same club shirt once again is certainly enough to excite football fans around the world.
