On Thursday (July 23), Birmingham Phoenix officially confirmed that Mustafizur will miss the tournament. The franchise said in a statement that a replacement player will be announced soon.
Mustafizur suffered the injury during the first ODI against Zimbabwe on July 6. At the time, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said he would need around four weeks to recover. Four days later, Birmingham Phoenix remained optimistic, stating that he would join the squad as scheduled and undergo a fitness assessment upon arrival.
Later, Birmingham Phoenix and the BCB medical team jointly decided that the final call on his participation would be made only after he completed a fitness test in Bangladesh. BCB's Cricket Operations Manager, Shahriar Nafees, had said that the fitness test was scheduled for next Monday.
However, before that assessment could even take place, Birmingham Phoenix confirmed that Mustafizur would no longer be part of their squad for this year's tournament.
Mustafizur currently plays only white-ball cricket for Bangladesh. Although the national team is set to face Australia in a two-match Test series, his absence is not expected to affect the squad, as he is not part of the Test setup
