150 on Debut: Proteas Batter Matches World Record

South African batter Jordan Hermann wrote his name into the history books of ODI cricket with a blistering innings at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek. The 24-year-old left-handed batter became only the second player in history to score 150 on his ODI debut. The opener has also equalled a unique world record that had stood since February 2025.

Until now, the record belonged solely to Hermann’s fellow Proteas batter Matthew Breetzke. On February 10, 2025, Breetzke scored 150 off 148 balls against New Zealand on his ODI debut at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Hermann and Breetzke now jointly hold the highest individual scores by a batter on ODI debut in the history of one-day international cricket.

Hermann was dismissed by Ruben Trumpelmann on the fifth ball of the 42nd over of South Africa’s innings, returning to the dressing room after scoring 150. Had he managed just one more run—taking his score to 151—he would have held the world record outright. Even so, the two highest individual scores on ODI debut now belong to South Africa.

Hermann was in an attacking mood from the very beginning, smashing 17 fours and three eye-catching sixes in his 126-ball innings. But he did not simply rely on brute force. With several well-constructed partnerships, he helped lay a strong foundation for the visitors to post a huge total against Namibia in their first bilateral ODI series.

The second-wicket partnership had the biggest impact. Batting at No. 3, Tony de Zorzi joined Hermann in a massive 190-run stand off 166 balls. De Zorzi scored 72 off 84 balls before being dismissed. Hermann then added another quick 59-run partnership off just 45 balls with Dewald Brevis for the third wicket, with Brevis contributing 33 off 28 balls. When Hermann’s epic innings finally came to an end in the 42nd over after he was caught by Trumpelmann, the damage had already been done, with the visitors having built a huge platform for their total.

Thanks to Hermann’s outstanding 150, South Africa now occupy the top two places on the list of the highest individual scores on ODI debut.

The West Indies legend Desmond Haynes’ 148 off 136 balls against Australia in 1978 has now slipped to third place. Haynes’ historic record, which had remained untouched for almost five decades, was broken by Matthew Breetzke in 2025, and Hermann has now placed his name alongside Breetzke’s on the list.
