Infantino to Run for FIFA Presidency Despite Pressure, FIFA Confirms

Despite the controversy surrounding him and growing calls for his resignation, Gianni Infantino is not changing his decision. He will run for a fourth term as FIFA president in next year’s election, a FIFA official said on Sunday.

A FIFA spokesperson said Infantino had announced in April that he would seek another term as president in the 2027 election. According to the official, there has been no change in that position.

“Of course, nothing has changed. Mr. Infantino will stand for election.”

However, pressure on Infantino has increased in recent times. He had planned to sell a 20 percent stake in FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, to private investors. The plan was dropped in July after facing widespread criticism.

After that, calls for Infantino’s resignation also came from UEFA, the AFC and Concacaf. However, the African and South American football confederations have continued to support him.

On Saturday, Infantino was asked about the recent unrest during the Under-20 World Cup in Poland. However, the 56-year-old FIFA president did not comment directly on the matter.

“There is a lot to say. But there is a right place and a right time to say it,” he said.

So far, no one has officially announced a candidacy to challenge Infantino in the 2027 election. As a result, despite strong opposition, he still has no officially declared rival in the race.
