Otamendi made 139 appearances for Argentina, with his final match coming in the recently concluded World Cup final. He wore the famous Albiceleste jersey for the last time in the 1–0 defeat to Spain. Although the ending was not the fairytale he had hoped for, the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner leaves the international stage with immense pride.
In an emotional message shared on Instagram, Otamendi wrote:
"Today, I have to write the hardest words of my career. Fate decided that my last match would be a World Cup final. Even though we didn't get the result we wanted, I leave with my head held high. This team gave everything until the very last second."
He also expressed his gratitude to Argentina for allowing him to achieve his lifelong dream of becoming a world champion.
"Thank you, Argentina. I will be forever grateful for giving me the opportunity to fulfill my dream of becoming a world champion."
While his international journey has come to an end, Otamendi has no plans to retire from club football just yet. He recently joined Argentine giants River Plate after spending nearly 16 years in Europe, where he represented Porto, Valencia, Manchester City, and Benfica.
The veteran defender also had a heartfelt message for the next generation of Argentine footballers.
"I leave with peace in my heart because I gave everything for this jersey and never stopped believing. Never lose your faith. This shirt rewards those who wear it with humility, sacrifice, and love."
He added:
"Keep your heads up and never stop fighting. Don't let any defeat take away your dreams. I truly believe that the next glorious chapter of Argentine football will be written by you."
Otamendi's retirement marks the end of a golden era for Argentina. During his international career, he helped his country win the 2022 FIFA World Cup and two Copa América titles, cementing his place as one of Argentina's most accomplished defenders.
